Florian Mermin, Minimal odorant, 2023

With Minimal odorant, Florian Mermin continues his exploration of the rose as a motif that is both sensory and evocative of memory. Composed of rose petals assembled on a wooden base, the work transforms the flower into a fragmentary material, preserving the trace of a plant’s presence whilst evoking its disappearance.
Stripped of its original form, the rose is reconstituted as a delicate surface, straddling the boundary between painting and sculpture. Whilst the petals remain visible, the scent itself eludes the image. It conjures up an intimate memory, sensations and recollections that extend the flower’s existence beyond its physical form. Between presence and absence, Minimal odorant thus gives form to that which can only be grasped for an instant: the fleeting persistence of life.
This artwork was presented as part of the exhibition La Rose et l’Araignée at the gallery.
